All of the magazines have a visible colour scheme that fits well with the theme of the magazines, they are all rock magazines and use a lot of red, black and grey on the double page spread.
The theme of the pages normally fit the whole magazines theme, so the distorted effect on the first magazine fits well with the distorted image of rock artists.
They all have a bold title and often have a quote from the band also in a bold font so it is easy to see and it draws you in so that you read the whole page.
They all use original images of the artists in question and are often posed for by said artists, there are also images of the crowd at a concert to show the type of fans they have. A lot of the posed images are of the artist performing at a concert or festival.
I think there is a surprising amount of pressure on men within the pop genre to have a good body and good fashion sense, maybe even to the extent where it is more important than the music they produce.
There is also a visible sexualisation of certain male artists such as Jason Derulo, he is known to have a very good body and because of that he is often shirtless in his videos such as the one for 'trumpets', shown above, in which both he and his love interest are sexualised to add to his appeal, this shows that sexualisation is visible in both male and female pop artists.
There also seems to be a lot of pressure for male pop artists to wear nice clothes and to have a good fashion sense, I believe this is causing male artists to become rather feminine in how they act towards their clothing and there hair due to the criticism they may receive if it is not perfect. However, as always there is an exception to this rule, some male artists such as Macklemore decide to go against the fashion conscious pop artists and wear whatever they want and not worry what others think about it, for instance this blue caped ensemble, shown above, is not something many other artists would wear due to the comments that would be made but he wears it anyway because it is what he is comfortable in.
Men are not seen as being as promiscuous as women, however their relationships are rather important to the media as people want to know everything about them, an example of this is Harry Styles who is seen as being a bit of a ladies man and has been in a lot of relationships since he became famous, a lot of the women he has dated are also famous which makes people want to know about it more.
Women are represented within the pop genre in a very sexual way, a lot of them dress in very revealing clothing and have photo's in magazines and online in which they expose their bodies to the public, unusually this is not really seen in any other genre of music and therefore female pop artists get a bad name, there is also a very visible theme that all female artists in this genre got to where they are because of their appearance and not their actual musical talent. The over sexualised women from this music genre are often bad role models, this can be seen by Miley Cyrus' VMA performance in which she danced in a raunchy outfit in a very distasteful fashion, this sets a bad example for young girls who looked up to her when she was still known as Hannah Montana from her Disney channel show, the video to the side explains why she may have felt pressured into acting this way by the pop genre.
However, not all female artists are like this, an example of an artist who is not overly sexualised is Adele who wears tasteful outfits and performs respectfully, she could be seen as one of few of these artists though as not many are very tasteful.
Women in this Genre are also seen as being quite promiscuous and are often noticed for the people they have dated, that is often more important for their image than the actual music they release, a good example of this is taylor swift who is known for her relationships with numerous famous men and her break up songs which sell very well as people want to know who they are about.
Kerrang content page analysis-
-The page has a clear white, black and yellow colour scheme with the text and back ground in these colours, these colours are not specific to a certain gender and that means that this magazine is aimed at a wider audience that a teen girls pop magazine.
-The headers and title are in yellow on a black background, this makes it stand out and makes them easier to read. They bits of text are also in a bigger, bolder font than the other text which makes them stand out even more as important information on the page.
-There is one big image of an artist along with a few small images scattered around the page, these images include pictures of other pages inside the magazine and of old magazine front covers along with other artists.
-The text which explains the title or header is in a smaller plain back font which is easy to read though it is a bit too small for my liking, this is also joined by a page number in red which means it is easy to find the page numbers without reading text you don't need.
-The website and phone number are in the bottom corner of the page which makes it visible but out of the way of the important text, however I once more think it takes up too much space for an advertisement of the magazine, like in NME magazine.
NME magazine content page analysis-
-There is an obvious black, white and red colour scheme on the page with headings in white with a black background to make them stand out.
-The page numbers are I red to make them stand out from the rest of the text on the page, this is needed due to the small size of the text.
-The font for the headings and title are in bold and are very visible, however the other text on the page is very small and hard to read.
- The images do not take up much space but in my opinion there is to much text and not enough images on the page as people will get bored of reading the text.
-The website and subscription advert takes up a lot of space and though it may help to get more customers it should not take up so much space on something that is not actual content.
- The band index stands out due to the red text and is good because it means an audience can easily see if the band they like are in the magazine and if so where the bits they want will be.
- They use a similar font throughout the page, though the font size changes depending on what the text is about or what it represents for instance the headings are bigger than the main text.
We love pop magazine content page-
- The most important stories which involve the most popular artists are the biggest on the page with images of the artist and then a page number and a quote from the artists interview, the page number is in a bold font and is surrounded by a yellow box to make it stand out more, the quote is in a light blue, which on the white background is easy to read.
- The magazine logo is in the top corner to show the magazine you are reading.
- The green and white background works well as all of the text and pictures stand out from it and are very visible.
- There is also green and black text in the bottom corner which is not the best choice of colour as the green is not very easy to read on the white background.
- There are two main fonts, the big bold title or heading font, which stands out to show the start of each bit of information or text and the smaller less important text which is not as obvious and in your face.
- The page is a bit too cluttered for my taste but does get the genre across well with images of pop artists at the bottom and throughout the page.
- The website address is at the bottom of the stage along with the page number as they do not take up to much space on the page which could be used for text about artists.
I would like to use the pop genre in my magazine as i think it appeals to a larger audience as it is the main genre that is listened to on a day to day basis, unlike a more Rock style of music which is not a widely enjoyed or available. I would like my product to use a nuetral colour scheme to get rid of gender identity problems such as pink for girls and blue for boys.
I am looking for a magazine which has a pop genre such as 'Top of the pop' magazine or 'Smash hits' magazine, however i like the layout of the front page of 'Vibe' magazine, 'Rolling stone' magazine and 'NME' magazine as they are not over cluttered or too brightly coloured and use more of a light but nuetral colour scheme, rather than the brighter covers of 'Sugar' magazine or 'We love pop' magazine which are very pink and yellow dominated.
Billboard magazine has not really got a colour scheme however there are a lot of neutral colours on the page which means that any other colours draw attention, making it easier to show important text. Most of the main points are in brighter yellows to make them stand out and are highlighted to make them more visible on the background which is an image of an artist, this also makes them easier to read on the page. The barcode and price are not in the way of the background and are not dominating the page as some can on other magazines.
NME magazine has a visible colour scheme of yellow and red on a black and white image of an artist which is related to the magazine as the background. The actual title is in a bold and large font which is in red, which makes it stand out well from the black and white background. All of the important information is in bright red or yellow so that it stands out from the black and white background and is clearly visible. Main headings are bigger than all other text to make it more visible and the page is not cluttered with loads of pictures and text.
'Top of the pops magazine' has a visible colour scheme that consists of Pink, White, Black and Yellow, there is also a consistent font, however not a consistent font size, this is because the size of the font is what shows how important that piece of text is. colour is also used to show importance on this front cover, the important pieces of the page are on a yellow background which draws the eye on the pink page.
Top Of The Pops Magazine-
This magazine is aimed at a young teenage girls, this can be seen by the use of the pink which is seen as a young and feminine colour, it also shows artists, such as Union J and One Direction, and celebrities, such as Tom Daley, who are more favoured by teenage girls. They also have fashion which is not overly expensive which appeals to their young audience who may not be earning money and cannot afford expensive clothing, it also talks about problems mostly faced by young girls such as bullying and weight issues.
NME Magazine-
The audience of this magazine are more likely to listen to a Rock/Alternative Genre of music as it contains pictures of and articles about artists who create that type of music, such as Jake Bugg and The Killers. They are also more likely to be a younger audience as the magazine is cheaper than some other music magazines at only £2.40, however it is still not cheap enough for a teenager as £2.40 per magazine is rather expensive. this gives the idea that the magazine is aimed at young adults and middle aged people who enjoy music from the Rock/Alternative Genre.
The audience of this magazine are much more likely to be an older person, this can be seen because it is a relatively expensive magazine, priced at £5.50 it is out of the price range of a younger person such as a teenager. However the music is still modern and from the pop Genre, this shows that is aimed at fans of music from the Charts, this may be why they have Kesha on the front as she is a Pop artist, however, the Billboard music awards are aimed at all music genres and the categories are spread over genres from Pop to Rock. This means that they may have a broader audience than they would have if it was just pop music as it could be purchased by more people.
The music magazines in this store were not placed in a designated spot on the magazine stand, and were found among the gossip magazines, such as 'Take a break' and 'Cosmopolitan' or the children's magazines instead of around other music magazines. This can show that the music magazines are not in demand as much in this shop as it may not be aimed at the type of young audience who would buy the magazine. However, the lack of music magazines could also be due to a high demand of them in this store as it was mid-week and they may have been sold out. Also due to the magazines being in random places the magazines do not stand out and may not sell as well as they ought to, this is because there is not a designated place for them so people who buy them do not know where to look for them. Also, as the magazines were among magazines that are aimed at an older female audience, music magazines that are aimed at young adults will not be of interest to them, therefore they will not sell as well as they would if they were in a designated area for just music magazines. Also if you were to find a 'Kerrang' magazine among the pop culture, teenage girl aimed magazines it would not be aimed at the right audience and would not sell very successfully compared to if they were placed somewhere separately. However there is also a visible graduated raise in the magazines so that the name at the top of the magazine is always visible, even if there are other magazines in front of it, this means that you can see the name of every magazine and can easily find the magazine you are looking for.
